Program Overview

The Intensive English and Orientation Program (IEOP), at Iowa State University, is a complete, full-time program in spoken and written American English. We emphasize the language skills students need for successful university study in the United States, including:

  • Speaking in classroom discussions
  • Taking notes from lectures
  • Reading efficiently
  • Writing clearly
  • Communicating with people on and off campus

An important aspect of the program is for students to learn about the people and customs of the United States. Examples on ways we accomplish this are: providing activities that take students into the community and throughout Iowa as well as giving students the opportunity to participate in conversation groups with American, native English speaking leaders.

Our registered students are allowed 'privileges' like any other ISU student. This provides IEOP students use of all university facilities and services, including dormitories, sports centers, computer labs, library and more than 500 student clubs and organizations.

Additional features of our program are:

  • Small classes with experienced, dedicated instructors
  • Language Learning Center with computer lab
  • Orientation to the ISU campus and community
  • Institutional (paper-based) TOEFL test at the end of each term*

Students also have the option to enroll or participate in:

  • Academic preparation class(es)**
  • TOEFL preparation class(es)**
  • One university course**
  • Participation in Friendships International Program
  • Student Ambassador program
