DirectorDr. Barbara Schwarte is the interim Director for IEOP. She is a member of the Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)/Applied Linguistics faculty in the English Department, where she teaches courses in English as a second language, teacher preparation, and linguistics. Her research interests include the role of gender in second language learning and acquisition and cross-cultural pragmatics. Dr. Schwarte has taught English to university students in Finland and Iran and has co-written two textbooks--one on academic English skills preparation for advanced learners of English and the other an English for specific purposes textbook for science majors. She is a past president of the international TESOL association (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages). Each semester, the IEOP employs graduate students to teach. These students are completing Master’s degrees in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). In most cases, they have studied languages, lived outside the United States and have had previous experience teaching English to speakers of other languages.
