Fees

All IEOP students are required to pay the program fee upon check-in (cash or check payable to IEOP). Registration will not be complete and classes may not begin until full payment or payment arrangements have been made.

Students are notified, by their ISU E-mail account, when their university fees (mandatory, insurance, room and meals) are added to their University Bill (U-bill). Students may pay their U-bill in full by the 10th day of class. Students who do not pay their first payment in full by the due date will automatically select the deferred option, and will be charged a $20 deferred billing fee. You will then have the opportunity to pay your bill in 3 installments throughout the semester.

Books & Supplies

IEOP students are given a list of required textbooks and supplies during new student orientation. These items are estimated at $200 per semester. All materials are available through the University Book Store located at the Memorial Union.

ISU Identification Card

Registered IEOP students are issued a university identification card called the "ISUCard". This card carries your university ID number and photo. The ISUCard verifies your status as an ISU student, and provides access to university services and facilities, such as AccessPlus and the Lied Recreation/Athletic Facility. You also have the option of making your ISUCard your ATM where it can be used at ATM machines, the University Book Store and other merchants where you see the SHAZAM or PLUS symbols displayed.

ISU Network ID (NetID)

With an Iowa State NetID, you have access to an Iowa State University E-mail account (WebMail) which can be accessed from anywhere on the Internet. This NetID is also used to access your AccessPlus, which is your secure and personalized online resource to your important and confidential university information.

Class Schedule

Our program is designed for students to attend every class into which they are placed. Daily attendance is mandatory for everyone regardless of visa status or reason for enrolling. Placements are continually reviewed to ensure continued success of each student.

Each level has regularly scheduled class time devoted to acquiring and refining skills in grammar, composition, reading and communication skills. We also offer a TOEFL preparation class. Click here to view a sample IEOP class schedule.

Language Learning Center

The Language Learning Center (LLC) is made up of a private computer and language lab for IEOP students. In addition to required lab time, students are encouraged to spend at least 2-3 hours each week in the LLC. Instructors and lab assistants are available to help students with material selection. Many resources are available for IEOP students including materials that compliment the core curriculum and TOEFL preparation. Click here to link to the LLC page.

Student Handbook (pdf)

Click here to download a sample IEOP student handbook. It is necessary to have Adobe® Reader® installed to view PDF files.

Curriculum and Placement

We offer a multi-level approach to our English instruction so that we may best serve the individual needs of students to meet their academic, professional and/or personal goals. To determine which placement level(s) are most suitable, IEOP requires all students to do proficiency testing during New Student Orientation.

Each level has regularly scheduled class time devoted to acquiring and refining skills in grammar, composition, reading and communication skills. We also offer a TOEFL preparation class. Although IEOP can help students reach their desired TOEFL score, we emphasize total language development as a measure of success.

Our program is designed for students to attend every class into which they are placed: attendance is mandatory for everyone regardless of visa status or reason for enrolling. Placements are continually reviewed to ensure continued success of each student. Click here to view a sample IEOP class schedule.

Activities and Events

Orientation to IEOP, campus and the community does not end with new student orientation. History, traditions and customs of the United States are integrated through cultural and social experiences each semester.

Students also have the opportunity to be involved in fun and educational activities on campus as well as in the Iowa community. Providing many options for involvement is just as important as the classroom instruction.

Since IEOP students are registered through the Iowa State University system and receive an identification card, they have access to all university services and facilities. Click here to view Activities and Events from previous IEOP semesters.

News/Announcements

Each week current news and events are announced both in the classroom and through the IEOP web site. This keeps students current on required events as well as optional activities within the program or throughout campus and the community. Students are encouraged to submit items of interest to share with classmates. Click here for IEOP Current News.

Progress Reporting

Students in IEOP have opportunity at mid-term to have a private conference with an instructor. This gives student and instructor a private time to discuss questions or concerns they may have as well as review the progress being made in IEOP. Students are also welcome to visit with instructors during their open office hours any time throughout the semester.

Certification

The Intensive English and Orientation Program provides a Certification of Completion letter at the end of each term to those students who have met the required academic and attendance requirements. Students may also open a "credential file" which holds mid-term and final grades, reports from instructors as well as enrollment/attendance information. Students, at any time, can request this information be sent to college/university admission offices or to anyone requesting this information from them.

Applying to ISU

Admission to IEOP is not the same as admission to a degree program at Iowa State University. Admission to the university requires a separate application to:
Office of Admissions, Iowa State University
Alumni Hall
Ames, Iowa 50011-2011
USA

IEOP does hold an information session each semester on the process of applying to Iowa State University. This gives students an opportunity to explore requirements and have questions answered in an informal setting. The IEOP also has an academic advisor within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences available to its students.
